Does My Child Have Hip Dysplasia? Early Signs and Diagnosis Tips
What Is Hip Dysplasia?
The hip joint is formed by the ball of the femur and the socket in the pelvis. In developmental dysplasia, this fit is abnormal; the ball does not sit properly in the socket or slips out easily.
Early Signs Parents Can Notice
- Difference in leg length
- Limited hip abduction (especially noticeable during diaper changes)
- Asymmetry of skin folds on thighs or buttocks
- Delayed or difficult walking
- Limping or waddling gait
Important: Even one of these signs is enough reason to see an orthopedic specialist. Early detection makes treatment easier and reduces the need for surgery.
Risk Factors
- Family history of hip dysplasia
- Breech presentation at birth
- Firstborn baby
- More common in girls
- Frequent tight swaddling
When Should You See a Doctor?
- Arrange a hip ultrasound within the first month after birth.
- Visit an orthopedic specialist promptly if any suspicious sign is present.
- Ensure hip checks during routine pediatric visits.
Why Early Diagnosis Matters
If detected early, non-surgical methods such as braces and harnesses can be highly effective. Delayed diagnosis may require surgery and involve longer recovery periods.
